UPD-A Champions of 3rd IIDC! At long last, UPDS got what it really deserved. In the recently concluded 3rd Inquirer Inter-collegiate Debating Championships, UPD-A, consisting of Carl Ng, Ben Baltazar, and Mark Lim, came out as the champions of the tournament, defeating ADMU-A in a 5-4 split decision by a nine-person adjudication panel, chaired by the Chief Adjudicator of the IIDC, Diane Desierto.
UPD-A won the championship after a grueling seven-round prelinaries followed by an octofinals, quarterfinals, semifinals, as well as the finals. With the motion that "This house believes that elections harm democratic growth in post-conflict situations", UPD-A was the affirmative whereas ADMU-A was in the negative. Carl Ng of UPD-A, the prime minister of the finals round, won as the best speaker of the debate. Meanwhile, two members of the UPDS contingent were able to enter the GenTXT top 10 best speakers, Ben Baltazar (UPD-A) who was 8th best speaker, and Carl Ng (UPD-A). The Inquirer Inter-collegiate Debating Championships is a national debating tournament according to the Asian Parliamentary format. The tournament is a joint event by the UP Debate Society and the Philippine Daily Inquirer, with co-presentors Liberal Philippines, and GenTXT.
